Overall Rating
There have been several over-the-door shower caddy reviews, and disappointingly, no shower caddy of that type passed the two-star mark out of five because of one common flaw – they all rust. But as always repeated on this website, rust is dependent on a lot of factors. One, for example, is the water quality, another is the humidity. A shower caddy manufacturer might say that their shower caddy is rustproof, but in reality, it’s up to a certain extent only depending on a lot of factors.
In this hanging shower caddy review, the InterDesign Metalo Bathroom Over Door Shower Caddy is put to the test to see how it fares with the other members of the over-the-door shower caddy type namely the InterDesign Door, mDesign Over Door, and the Zenna Home 7803SS – especially in the rust department.
According to InterDesign‘s website, they are a company that began as a houseware design and marketing company in 1974 with the main goal of designing and selling innovative products for the home at reasonable prices. Currently, InterDesign is retailing its products to more than 100 countries worldwide.
The InterDesign Metalo name has two product variants: one, as being reviewed, is the over-the-door type, while to other is the over-the-showerhead type. If you got your eyes on the over-the-showerhead type, I recommend looking at the mDesign Swing first.
Aside from the two product variants, the InterDesign Metalo also has three color classifications: silver, bronze, and satin. But wait just a minute, there may be some of you scratching your head wondering what the clear difference between silver and satin is if the two almost looks the same in their product photos? Well, satin is also silver and color but lacks the silvery o sparkly finish, in whereas the silver color has that mirror finish as compared to satin.
The InterDesign Metalo has three-tiered shelves with the two middle shelves movable through a swing motion. Placing the two middle shelves inside the over-the-door shower caddy’s body will provide you compactness compared to the hanging shower caddy going bulky if the two middle shelves are outside the body – useful if you have a narrow or small bathroom. But the good thing about placing the two shelves outside is that it gives you more freedom to place large bottles on the bottom shelf.

The InterDesign Metalo can also fit shower doors or bathroom doors (but mostly shower doors) up to 2 inches thick. As per an Amazon user, the InterDesign Metalo can also be snuggly placed on a towel rack. Additionally, the part of the over-the-door shower caddy that mounts the shower door has two nifty hooks at the back where you can conveniently place your robes and towels.
The swinging middle shelf is indeed useful, but the characteristic of the InterDesign Metalo that gives it the long edge on its other over-the-door shower caddy counterparts is its Thermobond Rust Resistant Coating. Thermobond is a trademarked product of the InterDesign company that gives a rust-resistant coating to various household products.
Other specifications of the InterDesign Metalo include the two suction cups near the bottom base of the hanging shower caddy that helps the whole over-the-door shower caddy locked in place.
InterDesign Metalo Pros
Below are the pros or the positives to the InterDesign Metalo over-the-door shower caddy. Those indicated below are in no way paid or sponsored by InterDesign nor Amazon.
- Swingable baskets. The swingable middle baskets of the InterDesign Metalo are a huge plus because not only does it let you experience the storage potential of three shelves, it also lets you have the opportunity to fit tall bottles. According to an Amazon review by Bee Si, the InterDesign Metalo is a “functional shower caddy with plenty of space”. However, the downsides of swingable baskets are that it makes the hanging shower caddy take up a lot of space, which is a huge difference if you have a small or narrow bathroom, and it can make the over-the-door shower caddy a little bit unstable even with its built-in suction cups.
- It does not rust. The InterDesign Metalo over-the-door version is the first over-the-door shower caddy reviewed on this website that reliably does not rust, thanks to the hanging shower caddy’s Thermobond Rust Resistant Coating. Rusting is a major factor in these shower caddy reviews because rust can affect your shower caddy in two ways: one is that it, of course, ruins the aesthetic look of it, and the second, is that it can affect the overall durability of it due to the rust “eating away” the metal parts of it.
InterDesign Metalo Cons
Likewise, the cons or negatives to the InterDesign Metalo over-the-door shower caddy are in no way paid or sponsored by InterDesign or Amazon.
- It does not fit in all shower doors. The InterDesign Metalo is not a one-size-fits-all kind of hanging shower caddy, it has, of course, its restrictions. According to specifications, the over-the-door shower caddy can fit between surfaces that are less than two inches thick. Frankly, a two-inch thick allowance isn’t going to get you far because other some shower enclosure’s door or wall thickness can exceed more than two inches. But the great thing is that you can snuggly place it on your towel rack!
- Swingable baskets are flimsy. A particular Amazon review stated that the baskets broke almost instantly and he or she used super glue and thread to attach them back. Well, credits to the guy or gal for being creative enough to fix it his or herself, but it’s given that the swingable baskets may be prone to damage if there are multiple heavy shower essentials placed on it. Think about it – the only thing supporting the swingable baskets are the hinges that allow it to swing back and forth from the over-the-door shower caddy’s base. But nevertheless, it’s still a minus point for the InterDesign Metalo.
Taking into account all the pros and cons, the InterDesign Metalo is rated five stars out of five overall. Plus points are given for the swingable baskets concept and super plus point for the thought that this hanging shower caddy does not rust. Take note too that this is the first over-the-door shower caddy that has been rated by more than two stars and has been rated a perfect five at the same time!
